We instruct pc patients in the beginning (and in writing for them to sign off on) that they should contact their primary care physicians after 5 pm, weekends, and holidays. It is also part of the APRN's voice mail message. Not sure if you have a hospice too but if so, you should not use hospice RNs to supplement pc staffing needs. In three years, we have not had any issues arise about pc availablility on weekends or holidays because we make it very clear up front what the procedure would be for them. Hope that helps a little.
