We have a 1 NP run program which is doing well and have just hired a 0.5 FTE RN. We are currently now billing for my services. My question is: Are there any restrictions to a RN doing the initial consults? I heard that joint commission may not agree with it

Hello. Thank you for your question. In response:
It is not within the scope of practice for a registered nurse to complete an initial consult, especially when diagnosing and treating symptoms. The registered nurse can be utilized to assist with the gathering of certain information such as family and social history. However, the physical examination, review of systems, and assessment and plan should be completed by a nurse practitioner, physcian assistant, or physician. Having a registered nurse complete initial assessments would not only be problematic for Joint Commission but also for the nurse's respective governing state board.
