We are a 405 bed hospital w/ a 3 yo consultative PC program. We saw 644 pts in '09 and 886 pts in '10. We are looking to add a 1FTE SW and I am looking for benchmarks or best practice to help us justify this increase in staffing.If your program is comprable I would also like to know your staffing model and if you could share your SW job description that would be great. CAPC has identified the recommended staffing for a PC consult service with an Inpatient Unit that see's a volume of 600 new patients/year to be 1 FTE SW. This information is included in "A Guide to Building a Hospital-Based Palliative Care Program" manual that is available on the CAPC Website. When you look at the competencies for palliative social work as outlined by NASW how broad and essential the SW role is. Another benchmark is the "National Consensus Project Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care." it doesn't give staffing ratios but outlines the expansive social work role on the palliative care IDT (interdisciplinary team).
