Post Palliative Care Unit visit

The nurse manager of our inpatient palliative care unit has asked me to direct her to a palliative care unit where she might visit to network and share ideas. She would prefer a 6-12 bed unit where the palliative care team does not serve as the attending of record. Also she would prefer to visit a unit that is not housed within a particular service area of the hospital, i.e. cancer center or heart center, as our current unit is housed on a general medicine unit serving all populations and the patients continue to be followed by their primary team with palliative care consult. If anyone knows of such a unit that might be open to a site visit, we will appreciate the suggestion. Susan

You'all would be more than welcome to visit our 11-bed designated PC unit here at VCU in Richmond, VA. Our PC MDs are the attendings on record and we are administratively run under our cancer center (though not geographically located within the actual walls of a cancer unit or cancer center). Thus we don't quite match your criteria and I'm not sure anyone else will -- I suspect that your criteria may be too narrow to find any such match. In most cases any PC-dedicated or -designated unit will have a PC MD as the attending. That is in fact one of the primary motivations for having such a unit -- providing the medical and nursing care in a PC-specific fashion. You are welcome to visit our 10 bed PC Unit in a 750 bed hospital on Long Island. We admit patients from all over the hospital, including patients from the the ICUs on vents. While we invite the primary attending to remain involved, the vast majority are transferred to the PC service.
