I can speak to the minimum, ie, I am the sole provider in the hospital, seeing pts on referral. I have no assigned IDT staff and no administrative staff but use existing staff who are responsible to the hospital administrator.

I started my program and am the only FTE. I am nurse consultant. I utilize the social workers and pharmacists and chaplains assigned to each unit and work with the attending. I see 30-40 pt's a month and am pretty maxed out with no help in sight. The program is just 2 yrs old. I am working on business plan to request more help- in my free time-haha.

A program can be successfully started with less than 1.0 FTE - the challenge becomes in sustaining the program with such limited staffing. Those that have been able to SUSTAIN the program with limited staffing have done so because they've effectively brought infrastructure to the program at the right time and in the right amount. Yet , as one might surmise, doing so demands management agility and acumen and, most precious of all, time. These are resources in short supply at most fledgling programs.

I give you all credit for your dedication and hard work. We are just planning our program and staffing is a question I have thought about. I have a feeling I will be like you, working alone for a while until the program grows. If that is the case, I hope I can use you for both support and knowledge.
