Hi,

I am developing a new hospital based inpatient and outpatient pediatric palliative care program and we are looking for documented pediatric palliative care outcomes regarding costs-savings and length of stay/re-admission rates, etc. to help gain administrative support.
I have found a lot of documentation that is DRG driven and supports adult programs but I am having difficulty finding the numbers for pediatric programs. Does anyone know where I can look?

Hello Jessica. You are correct that the pediatric financial case is very different from that used for adults. We address this at length in the context of the PCLC-Peds training. The short answer would be to look at what matters in your organization, what issues your leadership cares about, and demonstrate the impact that PPC has on those issues. For example, at our institution, where the ED is very busy and the ICU is often full, it is desireable to keep kids at home, out of the hospital, or at the best level of care to meet their needs, so advanced care planning by PPC helps there. Our program did a small quality study and replicated it a couple years later that demonstrated that PPC reduced ED visits, admissions, and costs per pt. More studies like this are needed.
