Hi, I am looking to create a standard operating procedures manual for our Pediatric Palliative Care program. Something that puts together a step by step of the tools, templates, consult process, referral criteria etc that is specific to the team so that we are all on the same page for how we will work together and understand the details related the internal process of our program. THis would be specific to the roles of each team member and emcompasses the process of how we do our work.

Hi. You are touching on a subject that has several important components to it. Firstly, there are the tools and templates that your team may choose to use to standardize care and direct your activities, and even establish standards of practice for your team and / or organization. Hopefully these will be based upon tried and true strategies for effective intervention, and you won't have to "reinvent the wheel." Many helpful tools are available through the CAPC PCLC-Peds process, including a trigger list for referrals, policy and procedure guideines, order sets examples,etc. from some well established programs. A second set of issues involves your team development process itself. A great strategy for developing "groupthink" and cohesion may in fact be to develop these practice guidlelines and the related tool box together, engaging interdisciplinary involvement to make decisions about the internal process of your program. It sounds like an important project to undertake. Did you have specific requests or questions for this forum as you posed your comments? Thanks a bunch I knew about most of what your site offered but you did offer good advice. In fact we are during our needs assessment now and will start meeting regularly to get moving on a lot of what you touched on. Specifically one question that comes to mind is where I can find educational Pediatric training modules like scenerios our staff can use in order to start practicing and learning. Do you know where these may be and if there is a fee? Thanks again for your responce.

Hi, the members of our palliative care team are looking into standardizing our approach to handling the death of a patient cared for by our team. Besides offering the counseling from the members of the team, does anyone have a specific standard that they use to follow-up with a family after they have experienced the death of the child? Such as writing a letter, card, making a follow-up phone call with specific comments/questions/advice for the family, or even sending flowers as a condolence from the hospital?
