I am a PACU nurse working in NH. Our facility has a wonderful palliative care program. My father has pancreatic cancer- he got a bypass in january ( unable to do a whipple) He is now begining to get uncomfortable. His PCP does not understand and continues to tell him "I think you are getting better" He lives in St Cloud Florida. Does anyone know of an outpatient palliative care doc in the Kissimmee/St Cloud area? He needs someone just to get him through- he is still working and wants to continue. But may need paracentesis/pain mgt etc... type care. Thank you for your time.

The Palliative Care Directory of Hospitals is a resource to help you or a loved one locate a hospital in your area that provides a palliative care program. The directory is based upon palliative care programs listed in the 2007 American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey.

I hope that this serves as a resource to your family in identifying a palliative care physician in that area.

Your best bet is a teaching hospital, or the local hospice may be willing to do a consult for pain management, etc.

I'm a hospice/pallaitive doc in CA. If your father is not receiving chemotherapy (or perhaps even if he is, if for the relief of symptoms), he would qualify for a hospice program based on prognosis alone, even if he is working and active. The hospice program should be able to provide aggressive symptom management to help him live as well as he can for as long as he lives. Paracentesis, if needed, should be part of that care. If there is a hospice in the area, I would call (with dad's permission) to discuss this with them. If the PCP is unwilling to refer, perhaps the hospice medical director would be willing to contact him for an informative chat. Many docs either don't know about hospice, misunderstand it, or are simply uncomfortable discussing these issues (which as a nurse I'm sure you know). I hope you can help your dad get the palliative care he needs and deserves. :)
