There is a regulation that says at least 1 RN must be in the building 24/7 to manage patients receiving meds that are delivered by push/pumps etc. State laws also come into play and the size of the facility is also a consideration. If the facility has less than 60 pts then the DON can be "part of the count", if the facility is larger than that, then the DON can not be part of the count. You'll need to contact your state Board of Nursing to learn the specifics for your facilities. Janet Braun
