Post DOH: Palliative Care Information ACT New York Stat

The palliative care information act just became law in NY state on 2/9/11 requiring attending physicians and NPs to offer "terminally ill" (defined as having a condition likely to cause death within 6 months) patients counseling and information regarding prognosis, palliative care and end of life care options. Documentation of counseling, or the decline of the patient to be counseled, needs to be included in the medical record.

I agree with the intention of the law and believe our consultation service will benefit from increased referrals, but the overall implementation seems burdensome.

I would be interested to hear from others how their organization intend to operationalize this new law.
