We purposely do not have a policy regarding "futile care" as this terminology is somewhat confusing and outdated. Health care providers should offer only those treatments which make sense and are consistent with patient preferences. Non beneficial treatments should be withdrawn or withheld. We believe this is good medical practice which does not require a policy. Our hospital does have a DNR/Withdraw/Withhold Policy which spells out New York State documentation requirements of decision maker, capacity and medical condition. There is no mention of futility in this policy either.
