Does anyone know of a informational handout/brochure that describes for family the actively dying patient. It helps when family doing the death vigil understands what the breathing, noises, movements etc of the dying patient are as well as the possible nursing/MD interventions.

We have a hospice within our healthcare system and they use a pamphlet called "Gone From My Sight" The Dying Experience by Barbara Karnes. They share that with PC in the hospital and it is useful for some pts, but I have not found anything for my families of pts whom we have withdrawn from support, because that is a little different. I am considering writing something of my own. I usually do education at the bedside, but families are stressed and forget, or you are explaining to mult different family members each time you go in the room.

Our hospice, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida in Jacksonville FL, has a small booklet titled "Preparing for the Dying Process - Life's Changing Journey". We give this to our families and it is great - helps with symptoms, written very simply.

is a copy of one the sheets that we have available to our families. There is a folder with info in each room and these sheets are also available in the living room of our inpt. unit. This is one of several including hydration/nutrition and '5 wishes'.
