We do not initiate NIV for resp distress, but it is not unusal for us to be called to see a pt who has been on NIV for medical management and has not progressed with poor prognosis, so PC is called. Usually once we get the pt comfortable on a drip we are able to dc NIV. Occasionally, the pt prefers to keep it on and dies with it, but for the most part, people do not like and do not find it much of a comfort measure.
