We allow DNR's in ICU if they are receiving treatment for pain or symptom management as they are still treatable. Sometimes if they are actively dying they remain in ICU and continue to receive palliative care.

Patients can certainly be in ICU if they are DNR since DNR does not mean do not treat and they may have reversible conditions that require aggressive treatment. If they are comfort care or limiting other aspects of their care they may be cared for in other areas. If they are comfort care only and actively dying we try to move them to a private room to provide unlimited visiting and privacy for them and their family.
