This whole idea of palliative care and trauma is an interesting topic. I am currently working in perinatel/neonatel palliative care. I have been thinking about how sudden loss or sudden acute medical situations create a very different dynamic for support. At this time, I am reviewing the trauma literature for applications in perinatel/neonatel palliative care. However, one thing does come to mind. I think one of the roles of palliative care is to help normalize the crazy process that our patients are experiencing as they try to cope and make decisions. We do this by affirming their feelings, and helping them know what to expect. We project stregnth and reliability that will help them as they try and negotiate raging waters. We help them negotiate a very strange and intense setting. We discover what is important to the patient and the family, we try and bring their life into the room. Just some rambling thoughts.

I am an ex SICU/trauma nurse. I had an existing relationship with the trauma team and was welcomed in my new role as Palliative RN. I round with the trauma surgeon and NP about once a week. I frequently participate in family conferences with the team on their most critical pt's with a lot of decision-making and potential EOL issues. It has worked well and I have been able to support some families through difficult times and decisions, as well as staff. There is definitely a place for palliative care in the trauma world...

very nice thoughts, thank you. Trauma is certainly that kind of time. I remember, in a whole different setting- long term illness and debility, appreciating pictures of what the patient used to look like prior to their terrible illness. Similarly, asking about patients' preferences, interests, beliefs, etc might complement your approach
