Sorry so late to this post. If you do not have an inpatient unit and are using a consult model accessibility is key. What I do is respond in person during the weekdays and encourage the ED doctors to leave the patient info on our voice mail overnight. Education is important-as an emergency physician and palliative care physician the common thread is rapid control of symptoms and rapid assessment. If you want to really learn how to tailor the information for the ER crowd you can take the EPEC-EM course which provides the information in a way that ER staff relate to since it was written by both sides.
