Palliative care in the ED is developing along two fronts currently. There are initiatives being pursued by ED professionals to obtain training in Palliative Medicine as well as palliative care services providing consulting services in the ED. In an effort to develop the skill of ED professionals a training course has been developed for physician called EPEC EM. A synopsis for the EPEC EM curriculum follows. Also, as a part of the CAPC PCLC partnership, a PCLC II curriculum is being developed. Palliative care in the ED is one of the topics being developed. Roll out for the new PCLC II curriculum will be in the fall. Here is the EPEC EM profile and contact information: EPEC EM Please contact the EPEC Project at 312-503-EPEC or conferences@epec.net regarding group conference registrations. As a member of the medical profession, you are committed to the life-long teaching of and learning from your colleagues. The Education in Palliative and End-of-life Care (EPEC&trade) Project invites you to learn from our newest curriculum, adapted by leaders in and for all members of the emergency medicine community. This conference is designed to provide two days of intense, interactive learning and to develop an environment of support for emergency medical teams that extends beyond the conference itself. Participants will receive both CE credit and EPEC-EM Trainer certification upon completion of the conference. Conference Objectives: • Describe the gaps, elements, and models of end-of-life care in the emergency setting, as well as related legal issues. • Explain the principles of rapid patient assessment and recognizing common symptoms of malignant and non-malignant pain, including dyspnea, nausea/vomiting, constipation, depression, anxiety, and delirium. • Describe strategies to address requests for sudden illness, death trajectory, and withholding/withdrawing treatment. • Describe strategies to successfully implement family witnessed resuscitation. • Describe methods for death disclosure and care of the family and team in the pediatric resuscitation. • Identify approaches to rapid communication, effective decision-making about goals of care, and advance directives in the ED.
