Post ECOG Performance status

How does the ECOG = Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Scale serve as a predictor in prognosis? Is there an approximation of duration of time a person has left to live associated with each grade (1-4)and is there any evidenced based practise to prove it's accuracy?

I haven't had experience with the ECOG in our practice but have asked our colleagues at VCU to weigh in and provide their insights and update the site with any evidenced based studies to help.

At Mount Carmel Health we use the Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) in our acute palliative medicine practice. It is very reliable and helpful in estimating prognosis.

The following info should help you access the original publication about this scale. The Palliative Performance Scale version 2 (PPSv2) tool is copyright to Victoria Hospice Society and replaces the first PPS published
in 1996 [J Pall Care 9(4): 26-32]. It cannot be altered or used in any way other than as intended and described here. Programs may
use PPSv2 with appropriate recognition. Available in electronic Word format by email request to judy.martell@caphealth.org
