I think the intent in this preferred practice is to not only assess whether doctors say they are discussing hospice, but rather to move to (as part of the outcome measurement to develop in the future) an assessment whereby patients would be asked if their physicians discussed treatment options with them and specifically if the physician discussed hospice.
I agree with you that its unlikely/undesirable to expect very ill patients and their families to be rating the physicians abilites but rather we would like to know their perspectives as to if hospice and palliative care are introduced as options. Betty Ferrell
