I heard a wonderful distinction recently between burnout and compassion fatigue. It is very important to acknowledge that our work can be exhausting without it leaving us without care for the patients and families.
Either way we need to pay attention to taking care of ourselves. We continually tell caregivers that self care is important. We need to remember that we are also caregivers and need to keep ourselves in a healthy place in order to take the best care of others.
