CAPC Palliative Care Discussion Forum

We are a 9 yr old program, in the process of putting together another presentation for our hospital administration. In the past we have used data re LOS, average daily costs, comparing pre and post palliative care, info re changing demographics, increased chronic illness, etc. We collect all kinds of data on how many members of our team see each patient, how many family conferences, how often we are successful in treating unmanaged symptoms within 48 hrs, how many palliative extubations we have done, etc. What suggestions do you have that might really grab the attention of our admin? We have clearly shown in the past that we are saving money. but we are also concerned that shorter LOS, plus fewer diagnostic tests, plus fewer re-admits because we send so many home with Hospice care, might actually be decreasing the hospital's revenue. We know we are doing the right thing by helping patients and families to understand and make choices that achieve their goals. but how do we know the cost-savings is making an impact to our administrators?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.

Here are a few ideas:
One topic to tap into is HCAHPS, since it is of high interest to leadership. A key measure is pain, and several are re communication. So it fits into a desire for palliative care programs to have more impact upstream and through others ("primary" palliative care). Here's a link below.

Also, using materials from the IPAL-ED and IPAL-ICU series to frame opportunities in these settings can stimulate good thinking. In November we will have IPAL-OP (outpatient), so using this time to assess interest/options for outpatient expansion or collaboration would bring in fresh thinking.
