Looking for guidance/input on the appropriate RN to patient staffing ratio for an inpatient hospice unit.

The level of care provided in the inpatient hospice unit will guide staffing for the unit. If there is a combination of GIP and residential you could have a lower ratio than if you have all GIP. We have combination Acute Palliative Care and Inpatient Hospice units in our acute care hospitals with staffing targeted at 4-5 per 1 RN with support from a nursing assistant. Free standing facilities would have their unique challenges for staffing and again it would depend on the case mix of routine hospice vs. GIP care.
