Post Palliative Care Information Act: NY
Author: Laura

The palliative care information act was passed by NY state and went into effect 2/9. It requires attending physicians and NP to offer information and counseling to terminally ill patients (defined as having a condition which will most likely cause death within 6 mos) about prognsis, goals, palliative care and hospice options. Patients can decline counseling, but documentation must show evidence in the medical record. This applies to both ambulatory and inpatient settings. I agree with the intent of the law and hope to see increased palliative care referrals. I am curious to know how others are operationalizing this in their workplace.
Thank you
