I have seen a few families doing this on their own. Even setting up a webcam to watch the patient (and possibly staff - it can make staff nervous). I am not sure about encouraging it, nor discouraging it or supplying infrastructure, but maybe suggesting it if possible.

I did see one family member so distracted about getting it to work right, he seemed to miss out on some of the things happening right in front of him.
