Post Use of Skype in palliative settings

We are thinking of encouraging families to use skype for family-physican conferences, and for persons to "sit vigil" with dying loved ones when they cannot be physically present.

Is anyone doing this? How are you doing it? What has been the response from families and patients?

We have used a webcam to connect a young adult patient to his family in Mexico before he died. They did not have a computer of their own and we had to coordinate a time when they could go to the community center, but it worked, and it was amazing. I arranged it with the IT Department who installed the technology.

I have seen a few families doing this on their own. Even setting up a webcam to watch the patient (and possibly staff - it can make staff nervous). I am not sure about encouraging it, nor discouraging it or supplying infrastructure, but maybe suggesting it if possible.

I did see one family member so distracted about getting it to work right, he seemed to miss out on some of the things happening right in front of him.
