Post Inpt Palliative Care-Physician Medical Director

We have only one PC/Hospice Certified physician in our facility who is the medical director of our outpatient home health hospice program. Another physician is pending completion of his hours and pending certification. Can the physician who is pending completion of PC/Hospice certification be the inpatient Palliative Care Medical Director while his certification is still pending.

Due to a shortage of trained and certified palliative physicians it isn't uncommon for physician to function in the palliative care setting prior to certification. The fact that the physician is pursuing certification and has a base line knowledge of the field is important. It will be important that the physician have a mentor and strong team for back up and assure high quality palliative care.
