General inpatient hospice beds are an important part of the continuum of palliative care and hospice services. A contractual agreement with a hospice is one way to approach inpatient hospice. The hospice partner would ensure adherence to medicare guidelines and standards, including appropriate level of hospice care, hospice as the care manager, and reimbursement to the hospital. The hospital would receive a per diem payment for general inpatient care, one of the four levels of hospice care, from the patient's hospice agency. A hospice partner is a key factor in operationalizing this concept and addressing the hospital-hospice interface.
