Post Palliative Care cost center

We have recently received approval to hire a part time palliative care physician to lead our palliative care team for our health system. However, as we do not have a palliative care department at this time, we would like to know in which cost center other facilities have placed the Palliative Care FTE. Many places do have them based in Oncology, but we don't want our program to appear to be an oncology-only service. Thank you for your help.

I understand your concern... and it is a reasonable one. How others perceive your program is key. Associations with end-of-life, oncology, or other traditional palliative care starting points can be hard to break in the minds of your referrers. Many programs are based in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Hospital Medicine. Best, mike Michael W. Our palliative care program was based in the Oncology section; however, we ended up with two "service lines": 1. oncology (and many of those patients were symptom management and explanation of hospice), 2. intensive care unit, where many family meetings regards goals of care occurred.
