At my institution it does, and, politically it is best to be asked to consult. I have heard of a few institutions that have criteria for automatic consults, but am not aware of who they are and how well it works. You are seeing pts and making suggestions for symptom management and possibly assisting with making decisions which may change the plan of care. It is best that the attending is in agreement with the consult in the 1st place.
