Let's see if this helps address your question about templates--our experience shows that a new consult typically takes about one hour with follow-ups ranging from 20 to 40 minutes--this is an average with some variations. Based on the number of hours/day plus other responsibilities like team meetings, education, and others, you can begin to estimate average ranges for physicians and other team members.
When to hire is best answered by looking at your overall program goals: are there additional opportunities that you are not able to address because staff are at capacity? Are consults delayed or missed? Have you accounted for vacation/CME coverage? For a Monday-Friday service with 10-15 consults/month, recommended provider ftes are 1-1.5, and for 25-30 consults/month, 1.7-2.0 provider fte.
