| Re:Joint Commission accreditation (by SharolHerr on 01/11/2011)
A couple of years ago the Joint Commission had published and then retracted plans to distribute guidelines for Palliative Care. At this time we have not seen guidelines for Palliative Accreditation published. The bench mark that is being used for program development is the National Consensus Project Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care 2nd Ed. The gold standard for programs is to have fellowhip trained physicians and board certification in palliative care. There is individual certification for RN's, LPN's, APN's and aides in Hospice/Palliative Nursing as well. Many programs use resources such as the Unipac Series in the training experience. A key to success is providing clinical training and mentorship for employees who may not be certified or fellowship trained when hired. The AAHPM website is a great place to look for training resources. Sharol Herr, RN, BSN, MSEd, CHPN; Palliative Clinical Manager; Mount Carmel Health Palliative Care Leadership Center.
