| Re:Starting an inpatient hospice (by SharolHerr on 06/02/2009)
Starting an inpatient hospice program would involve also starting a home hospice program. Many hospitals that want to have inpatient hospice units/services develop a contractural arrangement with an existing hospice program. There are medicare standards and guidelines for hospice programs that must be met and there are even guidelines about the precentage of hospice patients that may be tapping into the inpatient hospice level of care. There are 4 reimbursement levels for hospice care and the inpatient level of care is one. The others are routine home hospice care, respite care and continuous care. I would encourage you to get a copy of the Medicare Guidelines for hospice care for review and consider what would work best for your hospital-- starting a hospice program or contracting with another hospice.
