I see that JC is developing a certification for hospital PC programs. My question is: How do I justify paying for certification for an inpt population? Administration will want to know if it will help with contracts etc...They are looking at financial perspective and state we can have a great program without being JC certified. Any thoughts, ideas?

Hi Deb, You raise a good question. My perspective comes from participating as a member of the task force with the Joint Commission for the development of the certificate, and as a program administrator. I too have wondered about the best way to describe the value of the certificate to administrators. I think there is significant value in preparing for the certification process as a structured self assessment of your program. As a health care services certification program, the standards address clinical microsystems and patient centered care and teamwork--all relevant concepts for palliative care. I hope that positive responses to this certification will be a step toward integration of palliative care quality measures with other JC certificates. As a program administrator, I appreciate standards and measures against which we can evaluate our program, and this certificate is one way to evaluate performance. On a related note,The National Consensus Project will present eight Quality in Palliative Care Awards this year to organizations that have successfully implemented palliative care principles.
