You raise a good question. My perspective comes from participating as a member of the task force with the Joint Commission for the development of the certificate, and as a program administrator. I too have wondered about the best way to describe the value of the certificate to administrators. I think there is significant value in preparing for the certification process as a structured self assessment of your program. As a health care services certification program, the standards address clinical microsystems and patient centered care and teamwork--all relevant concepts for palliative care. I hope that positive responses to this certification will be a step toward integration of palliative care quality measures with other JC certificates. As a program administrator, I appreciate standards and measures against which we can evaluate our program, and this certificate is one way to evaluate performance.
On a related note,The National Consensus Project will present eight Quality in Palliative Care Awards this year to organizations that have successfully implemented palliative care principles. This might also be of interest to you.
