This post brings up an excellent point that there needs to be ongoing accountability and availability and structure to maintain competency. We have found that it is helpful to also have quarterly education opportunities at all our sites that are required for our primary palliative care staff on our units. The modified ELNEC curriculum is required of all nurses who will be working on our Acute Palliative Care Units and is offered 3x/y. There are lots of new opportunities becoming available for communication and education that we are trying to wrap our minds around but look forward to using--maybe even Twitter.
