We have a large PCRN/PCRP group at Tampa General Hospital in Florda (PCRP=Palliative Care Resource Professional--for non-nurses)
They go through an enhanced version of the ELNEC Train the Trainer Course and then are resources to their co-workers and patients.
We do the training at least twice a year plus the diff. ELNEC specialty courses.
They have a committee that does a lot of outreach, a newsletter, e-lists, etc.
They need to renew every 4 years.

This post brings up an excellent point that there needs to be ongoing accountability and availability and structure to maintain competency. We have found that it is helpful to also have quarterly education opportunities at all our sites that are required for our primary palliative care staff on our units. The modified ELNEC curriculum is required of all nurses who will be working on our Acute Palliative Care Units and is offered 3x/y. There are lots of new opportunities becoming available for communication and education that we are trying to wrap our minds around but look forward to using--maybe even Twitter. Do you provide continuing education credits to the nurses that attend your ELNEC courses? I am planning a future train-the-trainer program and know that ELNEC is not a CE provider.
