On the audio conference call today a caller referred to an article on spiritual assessment and care in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.
Could I get the complete reference information on this article?

This article describes the RCOPE which is a research tool for assessing spiritual distress. Importantly, as a research tool its questions are meant to be closed questions to elicit a very narrow, explicit, scorable response. It is assessing a very narrow range of belief and behavior. The wording of the questions cannot vary. "Cookbook" if you will. On the other hand, spiritual assessment questions for clinical use should serve to open up the discussion with the patient. They should be prompts which encourage the patient to go deeper into the topic. A spiritual assessment should never be cookbook. It should allow the person doing the assessment to follow the patient's story where ever it goes. Thus, we do not encourage the use of any spiritual assessment "tools". Certainly the questions of the RCOPE can be helpful in suggesting to chaplains and others areas that they might want to ask about to start a spiritual assessment. After that, the clinical skill of the chaplain should guide them in helping the patient to tell their story and to extract from that story the spiritual issues and themes that could be important in making a spiritual care plan.
