Aside from the "certification" question, i. e., who sets the official standards...here's my take
I truly value the discipline of theological and personal self-reflection that is - I think - the foundation in the BCC process through four + units of CPE. That practice/discipline is not included, nor is it required, in the ADEC CT.
However, the ADEC CT does require a lot more specialized didactic knowledge in the rapidly growing areas of death education, bereavement, etc. There is a lot of valuable (and humbling) research and practice going on that is truly assisting persons in crisis. We are light years away from Kubler-Ross, and ADEC's effort to standardize the quality of professional knowledge (for example, through its Body of Knowledge - BOK - that forms the basis of its certifying CT examination - which is very challenging, and which I truly needed the required 60 contact hours of didactic study)can be a real asset if one seeks to ensure a certain level of quality pastoral care for palliative care patients and their families.
