I haven't seen cost savings factored into department budgets but rather a system/hospital response to support staff dedicating hours to the palliative care initatives knowing that cost savings will occur. Finance people tend to be a bit more concrete with wanting to see where the actual cost savings occur. If you are working with case managers you could make a case for discharge planning beginning on day of admission and efficient and effective discharge planning, etc. We have been able to break down cost savings into variable costs such as room and board, pharmacy costs, testing, etc.
