Billing for patients on palliative care units is the same for any other acute care hospitalized patient, except for patients admitted under contract with a hospice agency for Acute or Respite care. The V code has no specific implications for mortality data unless a hospital decides to report mortality data with or without palliative care consultations or some other measure to reflect the decisions leading to the death (e.g. deaths due to patient decision to withdraw life sustaining care).
