Am I correct in that Physicians need to submit a "change" CMS 855i that lists "Palliative Care" Code 17 as their Primary or Secondary Speciality and how do you do that when the forms I've found do not list it in Section 2-D?

How does Code 17 affect reimbursement?

You don't have to change your provider's specialty to HPC #17, but it's something you should be looking at especially if you're billing inpatient services to Medicare. Form 855i does not have the specialty update yet, so we've sent a letter along with the 855I indicating that the provider's primary should be HPC #17 and the appropriate secondary has been indicated on the form. Word has it that right now Medicare is taking about 200 days to update. If you designate a provider's primary specialty as #17, it's highly unlikely that their services will be denied as two provider of the same specialty seeing the patient on the same day.

I am an advanced practice nurse with certification in hospice and palliative care as an APN. Is code 17 only for MD?

Specialties are not recognized for NP/PA's. Your specialty designation is the same as your credentialling. If you are an NP, your specialty is NP, if you're a PA, your specialty is PA.
