| Re:palliative care physician salary (by lhspragens on 02/26/2010)
The comparative salary data on palliative care MDs is still slim. However, MGMA is starting to include it - so if your medical practice participates in MGMA salary survey, encourage them to submit HPM salary info separately. As you know, salary is a function of workload, types of roles (leadership, ethics, QI, clinical, research, teaching), geography, and local norms in addition to field and experience. I have recently seen salary rates for HPM ranging from low $120's to $250k+ with a lot of clustering between $160k and $200k for folks with experience and board certification. An additional quirk is that some programs are paying MDs with reference to their original/core specialty (oncology, surgery, GIM, etc.), and others are looking at HPM independently. For now, I think the best bet is to find out what hospitalists, intensivists, and GIM are making in your setting with comparable experience. Also, of course, note that it is a tight market and salaries may rise given growth in demand for HPM vs. supply.

In our 1000+ doc group we pay the HPM docs on the same scale as our Hospitalists.

Our physician is a 0.5 FTE as Medical Director of our hospice program with a salary of $200k...the physician is also the Medical Director of our Palliative Medicine Service (we separate our hospice and palliative medicine service line) as a 0.4 FTE with a salary of $137k...we also provide additional bonus compensation through the hospice program and separately through the Palliative Medicine program.
