In the out patient setting as in casse of outpatient palliative care service will a visit in which patient was seen only by socialworker and not by physician or nurse practitioner be paid at all by medicare?

Is the seeting outpatient facility or outpatient clinic. In the clinic setting if the NP is employed by the practice she should be able to bill and be paid. The social worker is a stickier issue as social workers cannot bill E/M services. Our social work strictly works with geriatric patients and provides psychotherapy to the patients and their families. In the outpatient facility setting the social worker is usually employed by the hospital and the services she provides are included with the facility fees.
