I'm new to PC inpatient work. Do I have this right? I can spend 15 minutes looking at a chart to see what has happened since I saw the patient, review labs, talk to the nurse, see the patient then have a 65 minute family meeting and the maximum I can bill is a 99233??? Without prolonged service codes (since only 10 minutes may be face to face) how can I survive? Hope I'm being really stupid here...thanks

No you are not being stupid, and yes you are correct that is UNTIL CMS adopts the CPT2009 guidelines whereupon all time spent on the in-patient unit counts for prolonged services including family meetings not held with the patient.
