Post Salary support for Palliative Care MD's

I'm trying to gather data about funding for Palliative Care MD's for a hospital based Palliative Care Consult Service. I'm specifically interested in determining how many hospitals provide direct salary support. Any ideas?

Hmmm, I don't know of any hard data on this question. From my experience talking with program directors around the country, I'd say most hospitals offset at least some of the salary of at least one PC MD. While MDs can bill for their clinical work, they have other roles on the team besides direct clinical work, and hospitals do well to recruit and sustain an excellent MD who can serve as medical director of the program; lead the effort to market internally to other physicians; negotiate with the hospital leadership; and serve as educator and mentor to other team members as well as residents, fellows and the like (where applicable). We have shown that the cost-avoidance that PC programs produce as a side-effect of PC consultations is more than sufficient to cover this salary support (as well as that of other team memebrs'). I hope others respond to your post as well, to offer their experience and perspective on this.
